Kaffe's Mosaic fabric in blue was the ideal border for this quilt I thought.
Brandon Mably gave kind permission to show the photo's that inspired this quilt. Kaffe Fassett's latest book release Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts was where I found the gorgeous quilt he named Facet.
The diamond shapes caught my eye from the start, and I loved the colour palette he used for this quilt.

However on the next page in the book, Kaffe has shown a photo of the incredible mosaic wall his assistant Brandon Mably created to 'spruce up our London entryway' (quote). If you click on the picture you may even spot the teapot lids and cup handles he has placed throughout the mosaic...fabulous!

So the idea for combining Kaffe's gorgeous quilt and Brandon's fabulous wall began! Instead of string piecing the blocks as Kaffe has done, I decided to start with lighter and darker grey diamonds, which would become the 'grout' between the mosaic 'pieces'.
In the book Kaffe recommended using purples, reds, browns and greens for the darker diamonds, and oranges, pinks, blues and moss greens for the lighter diamonds. I decided to go with his colours and I'm thrilled with the result.
I have begun work on the quilting process of the quilt. I layered the backing, wadding and quilt top and held it together with bent pins (I don't like basting, takes too long!). Now I am stitching around each individual shape using free motion stitching in matching threads.
The end result is not perfect, but it holds down each mosaic piece perfectly.
Thank you to everyone who left a comment on the unfinished quilt top in the last post....I sincerely apologise for not replying to all the comments left, it was an interesting week here, but all good now. For those who asked if I mind if they copy this idea.....absolutely yes, I would be thrilled if you did, and I would love it if you send me a photo of your finished piece. I'm off to stitch around more mosaic pieces...did I tell you how addictive they can be? xo

Spectacular, stunning, amazing! Can you tell I love this quilt? Wondering if you're logging the quilting hours to see how long it takes to tediously stitch around each piece?
What a great design...and technique. Now I have a good excuse for keeping all those impossibly small and odd shaped scraps! I'm not sure if that is good or bad.
Lovely! I'm simply dazzled...had never seen such a concept!
Amazing Cathy...you have outdone yourself! Thanks for sharing your inspiration too. Hope all is well with you!
Simply spectacular. A beautiful design, congratulations.
Fantabulous Cathy! You can tell by the quilt-top you had a lot of fun during the process!
Beyond beautiful!
It is absolutely unbelievable. I bet it's even more so in person. Congrats on a great quilt!
I'm just in absolute awe Cathy!!
Seriously amazing! Your talent just blows me away!
Wow, wow, wow! I so wish we lived A LOT closer. I would love to come over and have a sew in with you! This is just phenomenal. You may be seeing a copy cat here in the future. They say that is the highest form of flattery, right? If it is possible, you just out did yourself!

Hall of Fame quilt, IMHO! Amazing, amazing, amazing! You should be thrilled because it is a thrilling quilt, Cathy! And, yes, I thank you for permission to copy this brilliant idea! :-) Take a bow!

In stitches,

It's been inspirational watching your progress with the quilt. Your border is perfect and the quilt is amazing. I love the way the quilting is making the patches pop up. Thanks for sharing the process.
Wow and wow. That quilt is so amazing that I'm not sure what else to say except WOW. I just recently started collecting Kaffe fabrics, but a quilt like this would also be great for using all of those crumbs of fabric that I insist on saving.
Great job!
absolutely stunning and how quick you finished it!! Did you get ány sleep this week? The quilting seems time consuming too, but wow, what great result!
WOW doesn't begin to express my thoughts. DH had to close my mouth for me because all I could say was WOW over and over.
Thank you so much for sharing ... fabulous.
Beyond stunning! I don't know if I would be up to doing a project like this.. you are amazing!
Just such an amazing quilt! Thank you for sharing all the steps. You have alot of patience to stitch around each piece! Truly a labor of love!
GORGEOUS! I think you surpassed the quilt that inspired you!

Does your machine mind quilting through the heat and bond?? Love your quilt.
Let's see, I don't want to mess up my terminology, as I am American - may I say that I am gobsmacked? Does that mean I am stunned in a good way? I really think this should be shared with Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mabley, they like to see how others build on their ideas and I think your quilt is unique and beautiful. I wish I knew how to free-motion on the machine....I'm more of a hand quilter and it would not have the same effect at all.

Wow, I hope Kaffe sees this; he would be so proud to see how you took his design and "made it your own". It is wonderful!
Lovely, and an amazingly good way of using up small scraps of fabric!
The border is just fantastic and the whole quilt is an absolute master piece!! Fantastic work!!
I've seen a similar tecdhnique used to do 'stained glass'. I love your quilt - but what a lot of work to stitch round every piece!!
Fantastic! I love your grout fabric - the whole project turned out great!
With English being my second language, I can not find words to describe how incredable this quilt is. The border fabric is brilliant! Great work, I am looking forward to see what the quilting is like.
What a great quilt Cathy - fantastic idea and beautifully executed!
looks great Cathy...........fiddly but great effect......
Oh wow!!!! Has Brandon seen this? Your quilt is spectacular Cathy! I'd say your quilt surpasses both of the inspiration pieces? The border is the perfect choice. You must put this in a show!:)

I was trying to think of words other than amazing and stunning.....so I will just say "sensationally spectacular"

FABULOUS, STUNNING, SMASHING!!! Truly. Bravo, Cathy!!!
Wow! The small pieces of the big prints really makes it look like pieces of broke plates etc. Particularly on the outside border. Amazing!
It's amazing!! Your work is stunningly beautiful :-)
This turned out so interesting and pretty. A new style of quilt.
I am speechless! Stunning, stunning!
Hi Cathy,
what can I say? It's fabulous! I can really imagine that sewing those little pieces down must have been totally addictive! Love it, love it, love it!
Cathy it looks absolutely fantastic! You've done a superb job with this quilt. And sewing all of the mosaic pieces. You have more patience than I do! It's certainly worth all of your effort.
Clever clever girl!!
This quilt is fabulous! I'm glad I was sent over to see it!
Absolutely STUNNING!!! I love the concept and the colours you used! WOW!!!
Cathy,
It is fabulous- what a lot of work to create your wonderful piece - Did you use some sort of bonding agent to keep the pieces in place? (like glue, stitch witchery, heat and bond or steam a seam interfacing) How ever you created it- is fantastic- I have this beautiful book that I bought earlier this year- it is fun just sit and be inspired by the photos in the book. You have taken your inspiration and put it into action..
From you picture it looks like you did raw edge applique... How large a quilt is it?
You may have explained all this before so if I am asking silly questions, I apologize - I am in the midst of the final parts of school's year end so my brain is on overload.
Thanks for sharing your process and your gorgeous quilt!
Regards,
Anna
Simply amazing! Can't wait to see more as you progress with the quilting!! I love seeing the wall that inspired the quilt.
So wonderful and you're right...the Kaffe's blue mosaic fabric is the ideal border! It's really a masterpiece.
Be still my beating heart!!!! You are amazing Cathy!

Stunning!
Your bag arrived today! Thank you again; I did a happy dance in person and on my blog :)
I wouldn't be surprised if Kaffe asked you to design a quilt for his next book Cathy! ;)
this quilt is so gorgeous i decided to try my luck with it too...i´m a beginner and ok with free motion quilting but have no idea how to sew the grey-black grid? seam allowances etc.? do you by any chance have a link to a tutorial for me? that would be awesome *waves from Austria to Australia* thanks in advance!
Lovely, but is it hard to do? For me it is harder than the calculus I teach in college. Well done.
-Samya :-)
Fantastic use of the fabrics and I love the detail with the outline stitching.
